CCC doesn’t in itself create encrypted backups, even if the drive that you are backing up is encrypted. There are work arounds, essentially, you will get your Mac’s built in File Vault to encrypt the drive and handle the encryptions. Making the drive encrypted takes a few. Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) is a Mac OS X application that can be used for creating file backups, complete images of your computer, or for cloning hard drives. In Carbon Copy Cloner, you can backup either a whole drive or part of the drive to an external hard drive at a scheduled time of your choosing (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.). This looks like quite a clunky process which makes me question the long term use of CCC as a backup option. There is nothing clunky about it. All you have to do is encrypt the destination drive.

CCC 4 and Mojave+: CCC 4 is qualified up to macOS High Sierra.
